The Marvels Director Says Her Film Will Be a Wacky and Silly Team-Up of Women Superheroes

The Marvels, the upcoming sequel to Captain Marvel, will be a “really wacky and silly” movie that explores “worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU”, according to director Nia DaCosta. The film will feature Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, three superheroes with different backgrounds and powers.

The Marvels Director Says Her Film Will Be a Wacky and Silly Team-Up of Women Superheroes

DaCosta, who is the first Black woman to direct a Marvel movie and the youngest director in the MCU, spoke to Variety about her vision for The Marvels and how she plans to avoid superhero fatigue, which she admits is a real phenomenon among audiences.

Speaking to Total Film magazine, DaCosta acknowledged that MCU superhero fatigue was a thing, noting that “I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists.” However, DaCosta also mentioned that in an effort to stand out from the normal world of superhero action, The Marvels is taking a bit of a lighter approach.

“The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky, and silly,” DaCosta said. “The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”

DaCosta also said that her film will not be an epic conclusion like the Avengers movies, but a team-up that showcases characters that women can relate to. “I think what’s really great about this film is that it’s about these three women who have very different backgrounds, very different powers, very different personalities, and how they come together and relate to each other,” she said.

Unlike previous Marvel team-ups, which often saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes band together to fend off a fearsome threat, The Marvels aims to deliver a more laser-targeted experience for those who can’t wait to see the trio of MCU heroes go higher, further, and faster together.

“The Avengers movies are these epic conclusions to chapters of storytelling, whereas this is a team-up within the narrative that we didn’t necessarily expect for Marvel,” explains executive producer Mary Livanos. “Usually, you wait for characters to show up all together in Avengers movies. We were excited to design a team-up featuring characters that women from all walks of life could relate to.”

The Marvels will be released on November 10, 2023 as part of Phase Four of the MCU. It will follow the events of WandaVision, where Parris made her debut as Monica Rambeau, a former S.W.O.R.D. agent who gained cosmic powers after entering the Hex. It will also introduce Vellani as Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager who idolizes Captain Marvel and has shape-shifting abilities. Larson will reprise her role as Carol Danvers, a former Air Force pilot who became one of the most powerful heroes in the universe.

The Marvels will certainly surprise and challenge fans with its wacky and silly approach to superhero storytelling.
