Ukrainian Drone Strikes Severely Hamper Russian Oil Refining, Impacting Global Markets

    Published on

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has taken a significant turn as Ukrainian drone strikes have managed to heavily disrupt Russia’s oil refining capabilities. Industry experts have estimated that the recent wave of Ukrainian drone attacks has slashed Russia’s daily oil-refining capacity by between 600,000 and 900,000 barrels. This strategic offensive, using domestically produced long-range drones, aims to undermine the economic foundations of Russia’s war effort and has led to production halts and damage to critical infrastructure.

The CEO of Gunvor Group, Torbjörn Törnqvist, speaking at a conference in Houston, outlined the extent of the capacity reduction to approximately 600,000 barrels per day. Analysts from JPMorgan Chase have offered a more severe estimate, reporting a loss of about 900,000 barrels of daily Russian oil-refining capacity. Furthermore, they predict that it could take “several weeks, if not months” for Russia to fully restore this lost capacity.

Ukraine initiated this bombing campaign against Russia’s oil and gas industry in January 2024. Kyiv officials have emphasized that these air strikes are intended to cut off fuel supplies to the Russian invasion force inside Ukraine, in addition to weakening Russia’s financial ability to sustain its military actions. In response to these attacks, Russia implemented a six-month ban on gasoline exports, a move that is widely perceived as a direct consequence of the Ukrainian drone offensive.

Since the start of 2024, Ukraine has successfully targeted more than a dozen Russian refineries, resulting in significant reductions in production. With a large portion of Russia’s air defense systems engaged in Ukraine, the Kremlin finds itself struggling to defend its homeland’s infrastructure against these drone attacks.

On the global stage, these disruptions have contributed to upward pressure on oil prices. Morgan Stanley, for instance, has raised its oil price forecasts for Brent crude in the face of reduced supply from OPEC and Russia. The bank’s revised forecast suggests that Brent could climb to $90 per barrel by the summer of 2024, highlighting the potential global economic ripple effects of the conflict.

Analysts have pointed out that the success of Ukraine’s drone campaign is contingent on maintaining a high frequency and consistency of strikes. These actions serve not only a military purpose but also exert economic pressure by potentially reducing Russia’s exports of refined material, which have historically been a significant source of revenue for the country. “The deep battle is meant to degrade and suppress and is not a substitute for ground operations,” Kofman said. “Success in such a campaign should be seen as part of a broader strategy, but not misrepresented as a war winning approach on its own.”

In addition to the impact on refining capacities, the drone attacks have also struck other targets, including Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) buildings and factories. This suggests a broader strategy on Ukraine’s part to disrupt and destabilize various elements of Russia’s infrastructure and economy.
