NATO’s Dynamic Mongoose and Neptune Strike Naval Exercises: A Show of Maritime Prowess and ASW Dexterity

    Published on

NATO’s maritime forces are currently engaged in a formidable display of naval prowess through two major exercises: Dynamic Mongoose 24 and Neptune Strike 24-1, which encompass vast stretches from the North Atlantic to the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and parts of the Baltic Sea. These exercises, ongoing until May 10, are not only a testament to NATO’s readiness but also a clear demonstration of the alliance’s expansive anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) capabilities.

Dynamic Mongoose 24, as released by NATO, is an annual exercise that embodies the commitment to prepare maritime crews for a spectrum of threats from the seabed to space. Taking place in the strategic Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom-Norway (GIUK-N) Gap, it features a robust array of ASW and ASuW activities. Hosted by Norway, the exercise extends from Stavanger to Reykjavik, Iceland, incorporating assets located near the Faroe Islands and supported by air bases across Iceland, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

The extensive multinational involvement sees submarines from the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States diving into the fray. Surface vessels from Germany, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom bolster the surface component, with maritime patrol aircraft from Canada, Germany, Norway, the UK, and the US comprising the aerial segment.

Simultaneously, Neptune Strike 24-1 radiates NATO’s resolve across the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas, engaging Albania, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Significant naval assets in Neptune Strike 24-1 include the French and Italian CSGs and the Spanish “Dedalo 24” and Turkish Anadolu ESGs, with the latter maintaining national command. The exercises feature diverse operations such as joint amphibious landings and intricate antisubmarine drills. Notably, the French Navy fleet oiler and command ship BCR Somme (A631) serves as SNMG2’s flagship, partaking in both sailing in concert with the Anadolu ESG and engaging in ASW exercises.

Behind the scenes, Commander, Submarines NATO (COMSUBNATO), who is also the NATO ASW Commander, skillfully orchestrates the ASW elements of both exercises across NATO’s AOR. As Rear Admiral Thomas Wall articulates, the command’s ability to simultaneously direct two ASW operations across the entire AOR is a potent assurance and deterrence measure, indicating NATO’s capacity to engage effectively in multiple theaters concurrently.
