On February 20, 1959, a day that would be etched into Canadian history as Black Friday, the government of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker delivered a shockwave through the nation’s aviation industry. In a startling move, the Canadian government terminated the Avro Arrow project, an advanced all-weather fighter interceptor known as the CF-105 Arrow, despite its technological prowess and the promise it held for Canadian aerospace capabilities.
Developed by Avro Canada between 1952 and 1959, the Avro Arrow epitomized the pinnacle of aviation technology with its futuristic delta-wing design and remarkable achievements in aerodynamics, computer-assisted flight technology, fabrication, and flight-control systems.
The Arrow was intended to be powered by the Orenda PS-13 Iroquois engine, which had shown resounding success in early tests. Moreover, on November 11, 1958, the Arrow RL-202 was recorded at Mach 1.98 during a test flight, signifying the aircraft’s extraordinary capabilities.
Despite these successes, controversy shrouded the project from the outset. The unveiling of the Avro Arrow to an audience of more than 12,000 fans on October 4, 1957, coincided with the Soviet Union’s Sputnik launch, intensifying Cold War anxieties. The technological arms race between the superpowers was shifting, with a growing emphasis on intercontinental ballistic missiles over manned interceptor jets.
Intelligence assessments in Canada, indicated a diminishing need for the Arrow, as the Soviet Union was transitioning from manned bombers to long-range ballistic missiles. This shift suggested that interceptor jets like the Arrow would play a decreasing role in the defense of North America.
The sudden cancellation of the Arrow program led to the loss of thousands of jobs overnight and the immediate cessation of work on the project. The fallout was swift and devastating; all aircraft were cut apart with blowtorches, and the accumulated knowledge in the form of blueprints, models, and designs was destroyed, sold off to a junk dealer at meager prices.
